I am not a financial expert.

I am simply an immigrant engineer who started preparing for retirement much later than I should have.

For most of my adult life, I focused on education, career, and family. I earned my Ph.D. in Korea, spent six years as a researcher in Germany, and immigrated to the United States in 2007 on an H-1B visa. Since then, I have built a career in the U.S. technology industry while raising a family and navigating life as an immigrant.

Like many professionals, I assumed that working hard would naturally lead to financial security.

I was wrong.

Looking back, I realize that I spent far more time planning projects and solving technical problems than learning about retirement, investing, taxes, or long-term financial planning. By the time I fully appreciated the importance of topics such as 401(k)s, IRAs, Social Security, and Medicare, retirement was no longer a distant concept. It was visible on the horizon.

That realization inspired this blog.

Why I Started This Blog

Late Start Retirement is a place where I document my journey toward financial preparedness and retirement.

I am not writing as an expert who has all the answers.

I am writing as someone who is still learning, adapting, and trying to make smarter decisions for the future.

My hope is that by sharing my experiences, successes, mistakes, and lessons learned, I can help others who may find themselves in a similar situation.

Perhaps you are:

  • An immigrant building a life in America
  • A professional who focused more on career than personal finance
  • Someone who feels late to retirement planning
  • Someone wondering whether it is too late to start

If so, you are not alone.

A Personal Note

One of the reasons I enjoy reflecting on my journey is that so much of it was never part of a master plan.

I arrived in America believing my visa approval was simply another step in my career. Nearly twenty years later, I learned that I had actually been selected through the H-1B lottery during one of the most competitive years in the program’s history.

That discovery reminded me how much of life depends on a mixture of preparation, opportunity, and luck.

This blog is my attempt to make the most of the opportunities I have been given and to share what I am learning along the way.

Thank you for visiting.

I hope you find something here that is useful, encouraging, or thought-provoking.
